Torbole sul Garda

The historic center of Torbole lies on the furthermost slopes of Mount Baldo, a paradise for flowers and wildlife. The steep road that leads from Torbole up to Nago witnessed an exceptional historical event in the year 1439 when the Venetian fleet descended down to the lake ("Galeas per montes") to contend with Milan for the possession of the northern bank of Lake Garda. Lower down, the houses branch out in the shape of an amphiteatre from the small port and have maintained a vague Venetian influence with the casa del Dazio (Dazio House) and the pointed porticos of the ex-Austrian customs building. Beyond the gate, some flights of steps lead to the hill where the church of St Andrew stands. The view of the lake from here is stupendous and you can cast your gaze over the blue of the sky and of the lake as far as the Rocca of Manerba.
