Climbing, touring and adventure sports

climbing, nordic walking, rock master, arco, monte baldo, rifugio, guide alpine
We have gathered these various activities altogether, since they all share the natural Alpine or sub-alpine setting in which you do them, and since you can actually do them all the year round in Garda’s area, thanks to the mildness of its climate. There are of course lots of differences; climbing is a true athletic glorification; touring is the safest way to discover nature healthily; equipped routes and routes with fixed ropes are conversely an exciting way to approach mountain.
As far as climbing is concerned, we can speak of actual rocky gymnasia sheer above the lake. We can find out where to climb, from Manerba del Garda ―which is the most southern― to Garda, Marciaga, Toscolano Maderno, Gargnano, Campione, Limone, Torbole, Nago and to the very famous Sarca Valley, with thousands of routes of any difficulty and length ―precisely, from 10 to 110 m. A competition like “Arco Rock Master” is a real must, the most celebrated show window and the most supported event by the fans.
With regards to touring, just as to other active sports, Garda area offers thousands of choices. The Mount Baldo massif (2218 m) ―named by botanists and naturalists “Hortus Europae”, i.e. “Garden of Europe”― the Tremalzo area, the peaks of Alto Garda Bresciano Park with Mount Pizzocolo and Mount Denervo, are only ones of the most popular stops. Equally charming are the tranquil walks on the Valtenesi or High Mantovano Hills, or in the Mincio Natural Park.
The numerous equipped routes and the ones with fixed ropes deserve special attention. There are at least fifteen of them ―both easy and difficult― on the mountains of Garda basin, and we are to mention here some of the most well-known and significant.
The most southern is a short but difficult route with fixed ropes ―100 m, but completely upright― through which you can reach Pirlo Hut on Mount Spino, in Gardone Riviera terristories and Toscolano Maderno. In Tremalzo massif, on the border among Alto Garda Bresciano Park, the Garda area belonging to Trentino and Ledro Valley, there is Capi Peak (927 m) on which there are two short but easy equipped routes, F. Susatti and M. Foletti ―both 100 m. Not far away, above Riva, we can find the difficult route fixed with ropes of the SAT Centenary, the so-called “Route of Friendship” ―600 m, in upright stretches― on the Sat Peak (1250 m). Going on northwards, you can find the short and easy equipped route of Mount Colodri (350 m) above the town of Arco, and slightly further up, above Sarche di Calavino, the smashing and hard route with fixed ropes Rino Pisetta ―300 m upright, with lots of stretches where you have to climb― till the Piccolo Dain (967 m).
Mount Baldo as well offers some equipped routes. From the short (100 m) and easy path Corne di Bes, or “Vipers’ Way” ―which starting from St. Valentino leads to the botanic garden of Corna Piana― to the more difficult route with fixed ropes Gerardo Sega ―300 m upright at times― going from Avio to the “Madonna of the Snow” (1020 m).
Do not forget the winter activities and the more demanding alpine activities one can do from December to March on the mountains and in the coldest valleys of Garda area ―alpine climbs on rock and mixed routes, ski-mountaineering and touring with snow shoes and climbs on ice falls!
Rafting is the latest adventure; rivers are to be found in the hinterland of the area belonging to Brescia ―Toscolano Maderno, Tignale, Tremosine, and Campione in the territory of Alto Garda Bresciano Park― and of the area belonging to Trentino ―Riva del Garda and Lake Ledro Valley. However, you can also find some nice river on Mount Baldo, close to St. Zeno di Montagna and to Brentino Belluno.
Keep in mind in conclusion the free fall, a gorgeous sport exclusively for the bravest. An amazing dive from the blue of the sky into the blue of Lake Garda clear waters. Runways are the highest peaks of Garda area, like Mount Baldo, Mount Pizzocolo or Tremalzo; landing spots towards Trentino or very close to the lake coasts.
